Seasonal Attunement // Ritucharya

Have you ever noticed how your energy levels, mood, and even appetite seem to fluctuate? Have you ever taken notice of when exactly these fluctuations happen? It’s likely not just a coincidence.

Attuning to the seasons, Ritucharya, aligns our lifestyle, diet, and daily habits with the changing conditions and is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic practice. In our current lifestyles, we've become accustomed to a certain level of comfort and control. Air-conditioned homes, heated cars, and a constant stream of artificial light have insulated us from the natural rhythms of the seasons. While offering comfort, they have also disrupt our innate connection to the natural rhythms of nature. In the same way that we put a coat on in the winter, we want to make sure we are making adjustments to our lifestyles that support homeostasis.

Changing routines can be challenging, especially if we are used our routines. However, when align ourselves with the natural world, we may experience increased energy, improved mood, and a greater sense of vitality.

Here’s a couple of examples:

  • The heavy, damp and renewing qualities of spring encourage us to focus on cleansing, detoxification and renewal. We can incorporate bitter and astringent foods (like dandelion) to support this process. Additionally bringing in more movement stimulates the body's natural renewal processes. Ayurvedic massage can stimulate lymphatic drainage and clear stagnation accumulated over winter.

  • During the hot summer months, we opt for cool, hydrating foods and drinks. Incorporate fruits and vegetables rich in water and natural sweetness content, such as cucumbers, watermelon, and mangoes. Light, airy clothing and plenty of rest are also essential for staying cool and comfortable.

  • As the the weather cools and the wind picks up in the fall we need to focus on grounding, heaviness and nurturing. Using warming foods and spices into your diet, such as ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon. It’s incredible how mother nature knows what we need each season - so connect with seasonal produce! A castor oil belly pack can support nourishment.

  • During the cold winter months, prioritize rest and rejuvenation. Incorporate nourishing foods and drinks, such as soups, stews, small amounts of meat, and warm herbal teas. Increasing our amount of sleep and rest.

Remember that everyone is made up of different qualities (prakruti), and some folks will be more sensitive to certain seasons than others. Interventions may differ person to person.
