Abhyanga | Ayurvedic Oil Massage
Abhyanga is a massage treatment aimed at balancing the body to changing seasons, lifestyle and ailments of the recipient. The application of warm, medicated oils to the skin helps to nourish and protect the tissues, improve circulation, promote lymphatic drainage and calm the nervous system.
Each oil possesses unique properties that address specific imbalances. Sesame oil is often selected its grounding and gently warming qualities, while coconut oil is known for its cooling and hydrating properties. Traditional herbal blends like Mahanarayan are selected for muscle and joint pain and tenderness, while Brahmi might be selected for anxious or restlessness.
Abhyanga is particularly beneficial during the changes that occur in the shoulder seasons(Spring and Fall) supporting the body’s resilience as it adapts to new climate and lifestyle conditions.
An Abhyanga Massage session begins with with the application of warm oil, followed by rhythmic massage strokes to drop you into your body and begin to still the mind. The practitioner may also focus on specific areas, such as the head, abdomen, and feet, to address particular concerns. A key component of Abhyanga is the inclusion of the belly in the massage, as the abdomen, in particular the naval, is considered a vital energy center in Ayurveda.
Wild Vedas massages are completed with a mini facial and then 10-15 minutes in the steam box sauna to allow the herbal oils to be absorbed into the skin for the most therapeutic benefit.
Regular oil massage is part of a consistent Ayurvedic Lifestyle practice for longevity. The Sanskrit word for oil is Sneha, this same word means Love.
